Up until I switched on the BBC breakfast news earlier this week I'd been blissfully unaware of the existence of the UK Centre for Tobacco Control Studies (UKCTCS). Nice work if you can get it and it makes me chuckle wondering if the main entrance to its building has a couple of buckets filled with sand tucked away in a corner for the discarded fag-ends of earnest researchers.
Smoke gets in your eyes
It's all in the initials of course. The UKCTCS is a UKCRC, clear so far? The UK Clinical Research Collaboration, established in 2004, is a wide ranging partnership which according to the website includes the main UK research funding bodies, acedemia, the NHS, regulatory bodies, the bioscience, healthcare and pharmaceutical industries and last on the list (as usual) patients.
That these bodies do sterling work on the whole is not in question, far from it. The question on most ordinary peoples lips though, especially those who have had their hip replacement operation cancelled for the second time, is surely much simpler. With the NHS involved, how much taxpayer money has paid for a group of people to sit in a room and decide it's far too risky for under 18's to catch a glimpse of the delicious Audrey Hepburn, cigarette holder clasped in delicately gloved hand, getting it on with George Peppard?
