On Guitar Heaven, Carlos Santana, everyone's favourite silent guitarist, shreds through classic songs by Led Zeppelin, the Beatles, Cream, AC/DC, and other bands who reside on the Mount Olympus of rock and roll.
Along for the ride are singers worthy of such classic material. Singers from classic modern bands such as… Train! and Linkin Park! Daughtry! Papa Roach and Matchbox 20! Truly, these are the new rock gods, ready to wear the mantle of their groundbreaking granddaddies.
Except that isn't true. That isn't true at all.
The Vocalists: A Mixed Bag on Guitar Heaven
To be fair, the singers on Guitar Heaven aren't all one hit wonders and pop-rock has-beens. Mr. Santana is also joined on the album by vocalists like Chris Cornell, Joe Cocker, India.Arie, and Jonny Lang, and while none of the singers on the album do a bad job, per se, these four are the ones that stand out as being the best and most distinctive of the litter, putting a little of themselves into their respective songs rather than just toeing the line. Joe Cocker in particular injects a hell of a lot of soul into Jimi Hendrix's "Little Wing," making it a highlight of the album.
As I said, the rest of the singers on the album perform their songs well, if a little too safely. The only awkward fit is Nas, who clumsily raps the verses of "Back in Black" - it feels like the track would have been more successful if Nas threw caution to the wind and freestyled over the entire song, rather than mess with the rhythm of the original lyrics and, by extension, mess with the rhythm of the song.
