Scotland offers the UK’s outdoor skiing experience. Five different resorts, two in the western Highlands and three in and around the Cairngorms, provide opportunities for downhill and freestyle skiing, snowboarding, sledging and even tubing, as well as a range of support facilities and sometimes recreational opportunities for the non-skiing members of the party.
The Cairngorm Resorts: Cairngorm, the Lecht and Glenshee
These three resorts make use of the great bulk and height of the Cairngorm mountains. The Cairngorm centre lies about twenty minutes from Aviemore while the other two are slightly more remote – the Lecht is some forty minutes from Grantown-on-Spey while Glenshee is twenty minutes from Braemar. All are within a couple of hours drive of Edinburgh and Aberdeen and not too much further from Glasgow..
Cairngorm claims to be Scotland’s most popular resort. Its12 lifts – including Scotland’s only funicular railway - offer access to runs with a maximum vertical drop of 400 metres, some suitable for more advanced skiers. As well as the skiing slopes there are is a sledging park and a facility for freestylers.
