The Old ’76 House has been a Rockland County landmark for centuries. Built by a man named Casparus Mabie in 1753, at the time American Revolution erupted the structure was used as meeting place for local patriots. During the conflict, General George Washington himself dined within its walls.

The house officially became a tavern in 1800 and continues to serve food and drink to this day. While Rockland County residents may know the Old ’76 House as a great place for dinner or brunch, how many of them know that it is alleged to be home to one of history’s more noteworthy ghosts? The spirit of British spy Major John Andre is said to stalk the premises. Andre was captured, tried, and hung for his activities connected with Benedict Arnold’s plot to surrender West Point to the British. His incarceration, trial, and execution occurred on and around the grounds of what is now the restaurant.
