Operating marionettes, or string puppets, is a great skill involving years of practice to accomplish a high degree of dexterity. Fortunately, Ann Perrin, (née Field) started learning as a child helping with her parents’ marionette theatre. These beautiful marionettes were all hand-made by her father in a variety of materials, such as wood, woodpulp and rubber, and were dressed by her talented designer mother. The largest marionettes weigh an incredible 4lbs.

A Lifetime on the Stage

Ron and Joan Field's Marionette Company has enjoyed a great pedigree, having performed for Prince Charles and Princess Anne, Lauren Bacall, Peter Sellers, Humphrey Lyttleton and Kenneth More, among others. They have been shown across a number of fabulous venues, including the Arcade Theatre, Blackpool, The Spa, Scarborough, Bognor, Clacton and Southsea.

Ann Perrin progressed to performing with her father’s larger cabaret marionettes with such icons of the stage as Morecambe & Wise, Alma Cogan, Hylda Baker and Max Miller, Ann has mingled with the famous from early childhood. When he first saw Ann at her fifteen-minute debut slot at Eastbourne Hippodrome, Max Miller remarked, “What’s all this then, gal?”
